Joel Guzmán

Joel Guzmán is a Grammy Award–winning accordionist, producer, educator, and influential figure in the evolution of contemporary conjunto and roots music. A second-generation musician, Guzmán was introduced to the accordion at an early age, performing in his father’s band in Washington State, where his family had relocated from Texas in the 1950s. Growing up surrounded by music, he developed a profound connection to the traditions of South Texas conjunto while beginning to forge his own distinctive voice and approach to the accordion.

In the 1980s, Guzmán returned to Texas and embarked on a professional career as a touring and session musician. His versatility as an accordionist, producer, and collaborator has led to a remarkable body of critically acclaimed and award-winning recordings. Among his landmark projects are the Grammy Award–winning Los Super Seven (1998), Polkas, Gritos y Acordeones (2005), and his contribution to the soundtrack of the Academy Award–winning film Crazy Heart.

Beyond his accomplishments on stage and in the recording studio, Guzmán has become an important ambassador for conjunto music, carrying the tradition into new artistic and educational spaces. Through his performances, recordings, production work, teaching, and mentorship of younger musicians, he continues to preserve the cultural legacy of South Texas conjunto while expanding its reach, artistic possibilities, and relevance for future generations
