Directions to the Texas State University Performing Arts Center:

 

  • Travel by Air: You may fly into Austin (AUS) or San Antonio (SAT) and rent a car

 

  • Travel by Car: From Austin / Dallas / Waco and the I-35 Corridor North: Follow I-35 South to San Marcos, take Exit #206 from IH-35. Stay on the access road. Turn RIGHT onto Aquarena Springs Drive / Loop 82. You will pass two traffic lights and cross over a railroad track. Bobcat Stadium will be on your left. At the second traffic light after the railroad tracks, continue STRAIGHT onto University Drive. Driving on University Drive, turn RIGHT at the second traffic light. The Performing Arts Center will be on your right, followed by a Parking Garage behind the building.

Artist Bios

Caroline Beatty holds the position of Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Texas State University where she conducts the TXST Wind Symphony, leads the graduate wind band conducting program, teaches undergraduate conducting and band literature courses, and provides primary oversight for the comprehensive band program. Performances under her direction garner consistent accolades from audience members, composers, and fellow performers for their artistry, excitement, and craft. The Texas State University Wind Symphony has been recognized for musical excellence through multiple invitations to perform for the National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association, the Southwestern Division of CBDNA, and the Texas Music Educators Association.

Dedicated to the perpetuation of ensemble art, Dr. Beatty maintains a vibrant conducting and teaching schedule outside of TXST, connecting with professionals, university students, and secondary students nationally and internationally. Conducting engagements have included concerts with Concordia Santa Fe, Interlochen World Youth Wind Symphony, All-State ensembles, and regional honor bands across the state and nation. Teaching invitations have included providing workshops on conducting for the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association and universities across the U.S. as well as numerous educational presentations.  Dr. Beatty is a sought-after clinician and adjudicator for secondary school bands and is a contributor to the recently published fourth volume of Rehearsing the Band (Meredith Music Publication).

Prior to her current position, Dr. Beatty held the position of Associate Director of Bands at Texas State University and Northwestern State University-Louisiana. Her secondary school teaching

experience includes thirteen years as a high school band director in the Houston area. Dr. Beatty holds a DMA degree in Conducting from the University of Michigan and both a MM degree in Conducting and a BM degree in Music Education from The University of Texas at Austin. She has served as the President of the Southwestern Division of the College Band Directors National Association, holds membership in the Texas Music Educators Association and the Texas Bandmasters Association, and is an elected member to Phi Beta Mu and the American Bandmasters Association. 

 

MitchellEstrin is Professorof Music Emeritusat the University of Florida.He was founder and conductor of the University of Florida Clarinet Ensemble and a University of Florida Research Foundation Professor. He served as the Artistic Director of the Vandoren Clarinet Ensemble Festival and was founder of the Buffet Crampon USA Summer Clarinet Academy. Prof. Estrin was the 20th President of the International Clarinet Association (ICA) and is an Honorary Member of the ICA, the highest career honor awarded in the discipline. He is the author of the biography Stanley Drucker, Clarinet Master published by Carl Fischer and Writing the Vandoren WAVE published by CAMco. 

Prior to his academic appointments, he had a 25-year association with the New York Philharmonic, and performedin hundreds of concerts as principal, second,and E-flat clarinetist under six music directors and many distinguished guest conductors. He accompanied the Philharmonic on 19 international tours and made dozens of recordings with the orchestra. He has performed with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, New Arts Trio, at the Newport Music Festival, and was a foundingmember of the Amadeus Ensemble. 

Prof. Estrinhas an extensive discography of solo and chamber music and recorded hundreds of television commercials and Hollywood motion-picture soundtracks. He also performed and recorded with many popular artists including Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Peter, Paul and Mary, Ray Charles, The Fugees, Smashing Pumpkins, and Natalie Merchant. Prof. Estrin has served as director of the ICA College, Festival, and Professors Clarinet Choirs, Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium Clarinet Choir, United States Navy Clarinet Choir,Texas State ClarinetFiesta Clarinet Choir,and Texas Clarinet Colloquium Clarinet Choir. He conducted the University of Florida Clarinet Ensemble throughout the United States and Europe, including three feature recitals at the ICA ClarinetFest. The ensemble recorded four critically acclaimed CDs for Mark Masters, Christmas Clarinets (2016), Clarinet Choir Classics (2012), Clarinet Thunder (2009), and Wind in the Reeds (2006). 

Prof. Estrin's students hold positions at major universities and have performed with such prestigious ensembles as the Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, New York Pops, United States Army Band "Pershing's Own", United States Army Field Band, and West Point Band. Mitchell Estrin studied clarinet with Stanley Drucker at The Juilliard School where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Nicholas Councilor is Assistant Professor of Practice at The University of Texas at San Antonio, where he teaches applied clarinet, woodwind methods, and directs the clarinet choir. He previously held teaching positions at Texas A&M University–Kingsville and The University of Texas at Austin. He also maintains a large private studio in Austin and San Antonio, where his students frequently make the TMEA All-State ensembles and earn top accolades in solo competitions. As a clinician for the D’Addario Woodwind Method Program, Dr. Councilor has taught nearly 100 clinics to students of all ages throughout Central Texas.

Dr. Councilor is a versatile freelance musician with an active schedule of solo, orchestral, and chamber music performances. He has performed as a featured soloist with the Austin Symphonic Band, the Waterloo Wind Band, and the EMU Wind Symphony, and performed John Corigliano’s Concerto with the University of Texas Wind Ensemble in a premiere performance of a new wind band transcription by Craig B. Davis. Nicholas is a member of the San Antonio Philharmonic, the Central Texas Philharmonic, and the Mid-Texas Symphony, and performs regularly with the Austin Symphony Orchestra and other regional orchestras across the state. He has also appeared as guest principal clarinetist with the San Antonio Symphony and the Dallas Winds. 

He can be heard as principal clarinetist on the UT Wind Ensemble recording Wine Dark Sea. As an avid chamber musician, Dr. Councilor has earned the silver medal at the prestigious Fischoff Competition and is a prizewinner of the Coleman and Plowman chamber music competitions, as well as the American Prize. He is also a skilled woodwind doubler and has performed for dozens of musical theater productions.

Dr. Councilor earned his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from The University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Eastern Michigan University. In his spare time, Nicholas enjoys daily walks in the park, game nights with friends, and spending time in the water during the summer.

            

            Vanguel Tangarov is an Associate Professor of Clarinet at Texas State University and the Artistic Director and Founder of the annual international clarinet event, the Texas State Clarinet Fiesta. Tangarov also holds the position of Principal Clarinetist with the Austin Opera, Mid-Texas Symphony, and Victoria Symphony Orchestras.

Prior to his current roles, Tangarov served as the Principal Clarinetist of the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra in Bulgaria (1993-1998), the Academia Chigiana Symphony Orchestra in Italy (1993-1997), the Jeunesses Musicales World Symphony Orchestra in Germany (1993-1994), and the Monterrey Symphony Orchestra (OSUANL) in Mexico (1998-2004). 

He has distinguished himself as a soloist, performing with orchestras such as the Györ Symphony in Hungary, the Mid-Texas Symphony and the Southeastern Philharmonic, Victoria Bach Festival Orchestra, and the Symphony of the Hills in the USA, the Plovdiv Philharmonic, the Rousse Philharmonic, the Varna Philharmonic, and the Sofia Philharmonic in Bulgaria, as well as the Constanta Philharmonic in Romania, the Monterrey Symphony (OSUANL), and Monterrey Chamber Orchestra in Mexico. 

His repertoire includes works by composers such as Mozart, Danzi, Cimarosa, Weber, Copland, Jean Françaix, Giampieri, Bernstein, Pipkov, and Artie Shaw.

Tangarov's illustrious career has taken him to over 20 countries across four continents, earning him acclaim from critics and audiences alike. He is equally renowned as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician and has graced prestigious venues worldwide, including the Berliner Philharmoniker Hall (Berlin), Gewandhaus (Leipzig), Schauspielhaus (Berlin), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Oslo Konserthaus (Norway), Cadogan Hall (London), Symphony Hall Birmingham (UK), Sheldonian Theater, Oxford (UK), Boston Symphony Hall (USA), Bulgaria Hall (Sofia), and Zaragoza Hall (Spain), among others.

Tangarov's journey in music began with studies under the guidance of Dimitar Boyanov at the Dobrin Petkov Music High School for gifted students in his native country. He continued his education at the National Academy of Music "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov" in Sofia, Bulgaria, where he earned his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in clarinet performance, studying under the tutelage of the renowned pedagogue and concert artist, Petko Radev, a former Principal Clarinetist of Teatro Alla Scala in Milan, Italy. 

Tangarov further honed his skills by completing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at The University of Texas at Austin, under the mentorship of Richard MacDowell. He also received instruction from esteemed musicians like Aurelian Octav Popa in Romania and Gerald Pahinger, the Principal Clarinetist of the Vienna Symphony.

Tangarov's solo appearances have left a lasting impression on audiences, including recitals at the 2018/2022 Neo-Path International Festival, the 2022/2023 VIMA Grand Strand Music Festival in Myrtle Beach, SC, and the 10th Anniversary Season Bulgarian Concert Evenings in New York in 2015. He has also participated in numerous International Clarinet Fests in 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2014, and 2010, held in Fort Worth, TX, Dublin, Ireland, Denver, CO, Reno, NV, Knoxville, TN, Ostende, Belgium, Orlando, FL, Lawrence, KS, Baton Rouge, LA, and Austin, TX. In addition, he performed at the opening ceremony of the 2014 International Plovdiv Chamber Music Competition in Bulgaria.         

His artistry can be heard on recordings as the Principal Clarinetist in a Naxos Label recording titled "Circus Maximus" by John Corigliano with The University of Texas at Austin Wind Ensemble, as well as on Harmonia Mundi Label recordings such as "Samuel Barber: An American Romantic" and the 2017 GRAMMY-nominated "Craig Hella Johnson: Considering Matthew Shepard." He has also contributed to the soundtrack of the movie "Knight of Cups," directed by Terrence Malick, in addition to more than 10 other recordings.

Throughout his career, Tangarov has received numerous accolades and prizes in both national and international clarinet competitions, including the Prague Spring International Competition in 1996 (6th place overall), the United Nations International Clarinet Competition in Portugal in 1994 (4th place overall), the First International Clarinet Competition in Romania in 1993 (2nd prize), "The Music and the Earth" International Chamber Music Competition in Bulgaria in 1993 (3rd prize), the Bulgarian National Clarinet Competition for French Music in 1997 (1st prize), the Brahms Academy Competition for Chamber Music in Bulgaria in 1993 (2nd prize), the Bulgarian National Radio-Mozart Chamber Music Competition in 1991 (1st prize with a clarinet quintet), and the Bulgarian National Clarinet Competition in 1990 (1st prize).

Joseph Trevino is currently an assistant band director at Karen Wagner High School in San Antonio, TX where he has spent the past two years teaching woodwinds, coaching chamber ensembles, and directing the sub non-varsity concert band. Under his tutelage, the program has had a significant increase in TMEA district, region, area, and All-State woodwind musicians. During his tenure at Wagner, chamber ensembles such as the clarinet choir and saxophone quartet have advanced to finals in state chamber music competitions and received superior ratings at the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest. 

Mr. Trevino received his undergraduate degree in Music Studies from Texas State University where he graduated magna cum laude and maintained a successful private woodwind studio of students from San Antonio, Austin, and Del Rio. At Texas State, Mr. Trevino performed in the Texas State Clarinet Choir, the Texas State Jazz Orchestra, the SONUS Saxophone Quartet, and the Texas State Wind Symphony. 

Mr. Trevino is an active member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association, the North American Saxophone Alliance, and the International Clarinet Association. 

 

Born in Hungary in 1974, Gabor Varga studied at the University of Szeged and the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest gaining his diplomas in 1996 and 1998 respectively. He graduated from the Paris Conservatoire as a Postgraduate in 2002.

His professional orchestral career began in 1995 when he was engaged as Principal Clarinet in the Györ Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1996 he became principal of Concerto Budapest, and since 1997 he has been principal in the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Between 2005 and 

2007 he served as Principal with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra while on sabbatical from Budapest. He has also worked regularly with the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra since 2001.

Winner of several national (in 1985, 1988 & 1992) and international prizes (1994, 1995 & 2001), he has since performed in more than 25 countries worldwide (including USA, Canada, Peru, Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore, UK, France, Spain & Italy) and appeared as a soloist in such concert halls as the Musikverein in Vienna and the Gewandhaus in Lepzig, participating in various music festivals and appearing at the most prestigious clarinet festivals.

A keen advocate of new music, he has premiered several new works of chamber music and commissioned numerous Concerti from leading composers like M. Patterson, Kovács, Durkó, Fekete, Szentpàli, Vajda and is continually searching for opportunities to introduce new music to 

the Hungarian public including the Sonata by Mieczyslaw Weinberg and Thea Musgrave's Clarinet Concerto.

His recordings include several chamber works and Concertos by Weber and Mozart for Hungarian Radio and CD recordings of the Nielsen Concerto, Dreamdances by Kovàcs, chamber music by Drusetzky and Vajda's clarinet works.

He regularly gives masterclasses in Europe, Asia, North America, South America at major universities (Beijing, Katowice, London etc.) and for the ICA and ECA clarinet festivals. His teaching career started at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest in 2001 as an assistant. In 2006 he taught at the NAFA in Singapore. In 2014 he joined the staff of the University of Debrecen in Eastern Hungary but later that year he was appointed Professor of Clarinet at the Tibor Varga Faculty of Musical 

Arts at the University of Györ.

Between 2017 and 2019 he was holding the position of “International Chair of Clarinet “at the RNCM, Manchester, where later on 2019 he was appointed to position of “clarinet tutor “ 

Since 2022 he is working at the Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, IN.

An engaging and accomplished clarinetist, Dr. Andrea Vos-Rochefort regularly premieres new works in recital and at Clarinetfest and has performed with the Dayton Philharmonic, Orchestra Kentucky, Richmond Symphony, Lima Orchestra, Carmel Symphony, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Lexington Philharmonic, West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony, Corpus Christi Symphony, Midland-Odessa Symphony, Victoria Symphony, and San Antonio Symphony. 

Dr. Vos-Rochefort is the Assistant Professor of Clarinet at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and previously served as Adjunct Instructor of Clarinet at University of Dayton and Stivers School for the Arts. She is passionate about outreach and has served as Artistic Director of the Artalism Coalition, Community Engagement & Education Manager with concert: nova, and developed a program of 20-25 interdisciplinary arts workshops in Cincinnati Public Schools each year for grades K-12. 

Andrea received her doctoral degree from Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music studying with Ben Freimuth, her master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music studying with Mark Nuccio, Diplômes Supérieurs in Clarinet and Chamber Music from L’Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris studying with Guy Deplus, and her bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College studying with Michael Galvan. She is a proud ReedGeek Artist, Buffet Crampon Performing Artist and Clinician, and Vandoren Artist Clinician.          

 

Gary Winder is an Executive Vice President at Dansr, Inc., where he has worked for the past 13 years. Prior to joining Dansr, he held the position of Director of Sales for Yamaha B&O.

Gary’s musical journey began at the age of 11 when he started taking clarinet lessons at school. He later pursued a university degree in education and performance. During his time at university, he spent three years working in retail at a local music store, followed by another two years after completing his military service. In 1987, he moved to the United States, where his career has been entirely in the manufacturing and wholesale sectors.

Throughout his career, Gary has built many long-lasting relationships with dealers, particularly through his involvement with the NASMD organization.
