Texas State Opera Theatre is one of the fastest growing, progressive opera programs in the country. With students excelling in summer opera programs and the professional stage, the word is getting out nationwide that Texas State University is providing a specific, professionally viable opera training experience. It combines numerous performance opportunities for both graduates and undergraduates with hands-on work on performance technique in the classroom as well as one-on-one. Recent masterclasses include acting with John De Lancie, voice with Margaret Lattimore, Maria Kanyova, and David DQ Lee; collaboration with Margo Garrett, and movement with Andrea Heaberlin.  This spring, our students also had the opportunity to work with soprano Margaret Rose-Koenn and mezzo-soprano Jill Grove.

Check out the state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center, which was opened in the Fall of 2014.  An expansive facility, this is where we do our opera productions, scenes productions, and student recitals.

Designed by the architectural firm of Morris Architects, the 69,122-square-foot facility features two professional-quality performance venues — the Patti Strickel Harrison Theatre that seats 397 patrons and the Recital Hall that seats 312 patrons.  With instructional space, as well as design and production spaces, the Performing Arts Center is well equipped to meet the educational and artistic production needs of our academic units as it serves the broader San Marcos community
